How to Install Forge

The following is simple instructions about how to install Forge for minecraft.

1. Open the Minecraft launcher, log in.
2. Click "New Profile" on the bottom left.
3. Name the profile whatever you want, probably something related to the fact that this will be forge and minecraft version 1.7.2.
4. In the second section, titled "Version Selection", click the "Use version" dropdown.  Select the option "release 1.7.2.
5. Click the button "Save Profile" on the bottom right of the window.
6. From the "Profile" dropdown near the bottom left of the launcher, select the new profile you just created.
7. Hit "Play".
8. Once the game launches, quit Minecraft.
9. Download the Forge installer for the version you wish to install.
10. Run the launcher by double-clicking the .jar file.  On MacOS, this will require you right-click the .jar and select "Open", then click "Open" again.
11. Leave the option selected as "Install Client".  In the text box near the bottom, it should already have the directory selected for where your minecraft installation is.  If not, it should be:
1. Windows: C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft
2. Mac OSX: /Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/minecraft
12. Click "OK".  It will install Forge.
13. Relaunch Minecraft.
14. Make sure the profile you created earlier is selected in the dropdown near the bottom left of the launcher.
15. Click "Edit Profile" in the bottom left.
16. In the "Version Selection" section, click the "Use version" dropdown.  There will be a new option, titled "release 1.7.2-Forge<version>".  Select that version.
17. Click "Save Profile" in the bottom right.
18. Make sure the profile you just edited is selected.
19. Click "Play".

Congratulations!  You installed Forge in your minecraft client!


To update Forge, simply follow steps 9-19 for the new version.  When you open the version dropdown, there will be multiple options listed with "release 1.7.2-Forge<version>.  Simply select the one for the version you wish to use, and you're good to go!
